A battle has been brewing between big money and the city of Inglewood, largely sparked by digital billboards. Billionaire Stan Kroenke wants the city to take down dozens of those billboards, which he says undercut Inglewood’s development agreement with Hollywood Park, the development in which he has invested. Kroenke also says Inglewood owes him $400 million in reimbursements for infrastructure improvements stemming from Hollywood Park and SoFi Stadium. KCRW talks to New York Times writer Ken Belson about his reporting on the ongoing showdown.

A battle has been brewing between big money and the city of Inglewood, largely sparked by digital billboards. Billionaire Stan Kroenke wants the city to take down dozens of those billboards, which he says undercut Inglewood’s development agreement with Hollywood Park, the development in which he has invested.

Kroenke and his group the City of Inglewood in the past decade. Kroenke and his companies have sued the City of Inglewood in an attempt to block the city's deal with the media company called WOW Media. WOW installs billboards across the city gaining ad revenue and where the city receives a cut of that revenue. The City of Inglewood gets 7.5 million dollars of the revenue the signs generate.

Kroenke's lawsuit cites that the city's deal with WOW Media opens the door to guerilla marketing around SoFi Stadium and violates a 2015 development agreement and allows ambush marketing against his partnerships. A judge ruled, however, against the Kroenke group's argument of guerilla marketing saying the group failed to indicate what the damages were on his side, how much advertising revenue he would lose from competing marketing of any brand partnership Kroenke and SoFi has.

Kroenke also says Inglewood owes him $400 million in reimbursements for infrastructure improvements cost that he has paid on the front end for Hollywood Park and SoFi Stadium.
