The Hawthorne General Plan Update represents a major step toward shaping the city’s future growth and development in a way that reflects the evolving needs and values of its residents. Having last been updated in 1990, this comprehensive effort will modernize key elements of the City’s planning framework, including Land Use, Circulation, Housing, Conservation, Open Space, Safety, and Noise. The update process, expected to span approximately three years, will better position Hawthorne for future funding opportunities and ensure that equity and sustainability remain central to the City’s long-term vision.

To ensure the updated General Plan is informed by community voices and grounded in public input, the Kimley-Horn and the City of Hawthorne is partnering with TRG to lead a robust and inclusive outreach process.

TRG’s engagement strategy ensures residents not only participate but understand how their input will shape the plan. To gather broad interest and sustained community involvement around the project, TRG is implementing a communication campaign that includes press releases, social media content, and newsletters promoting upcoming events and activities.

A key component of TRG’s outreach are pop-up events and intercepts designed to engage residents who may not attend traditional public meetings. These events are in areas that are familiar and typically high traffic such as near transit hubs, businesses, libraries as well as popular community gatherings such as Touch a Truck where residents of all ages can participate. TRG’s approach also includes creating clear, visually engaging outreach materials to translate complex planning concepts into approachable information for a broad audience such as residents, business owners, elected officials, and community-based organizations.

Through this multi-layered outreach approach, TRG and the City of Hawthorne are fostering meaningful dialogue around the city’s future, ensuring the updated General Plan is equitable and reflective of the community’s collective vision.
